Description

Glibenclamide comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with breakfast or the first main meal of the day. However, in some cases your doctor may tell you to take Glibenclamide twice a day. To help you remember to take Glibenclamide, take it at around the same time(s) every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Glibenclamide exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of Glibenclamide and gradually increase your dose if needed. After you have taken Glibenclamide for some time, Glibenclamide may not control your blood sugar as well as it did at the beginning of your treatment. Your doctor may adjust the dose of your medication as needed so that the medication will work best for you. Be sure to tell your doctor how you are feeling and if your blood sugar test results have been higher or lower than normal at any time during your treatment.

Glibenclamide helps control blood sugar but does not cure diabetes. Continue to take Glibenclamide even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Glibenclamide without talking to your doctor.

Dosage

Take Glibenclamide, micronized exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. To do so may increase the chance of side effects.

Carefully follow the special meal plan your doctor gave you. This is the most important part of controlling your condition, and is necessary if the medicine is to work properly. Also, exercise regularly and test for sugar in your blood or urine as directed.

Do not change to another brand without checking with your doctor. The number of tablets that you take depends on the brand and strength of the medicine. If you refill your medicine and it looks different, check with your pharmacist.

The dose of Glibenclamide, micronized will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of Glibenclamide, micronized. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

For type 2 diabetes: For oral dosage form (micronized tablets): Adults—At first, 1.5 to 3 milligrams (mg) once a day taken with breakfast or the first main meal. Some patients may start at 0.75 mg per day. Your doctor may adjust your dose if needed. However, the dose is usually not more than 12 mg per day. Children—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.

Overdose

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. A Glibenclamide overdose can cause life-threatening hypoglycemia.

Symptoms of severe hypoglycemia include extreme weakness, nausea, tremors, sweating, confusion, trouble speaking, fast heartbeats, or seizure.

Storage

Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).

It is important to keep all medication out of sight and reach of children as many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and young children can open them easily. To protect young children from poisoning, always lock safety caps and immediately place the medication in a safe location – one that is up and away and out of their sight and reach. http://www.upandaway.org

Unneeded medications should be disposed of in special ways to ensure that pets, children, and other people cannot consume them. However, you should not flush this medication down the toilet. Instead, the best way to dispose of your medication is through a medicine take-back program. Talk to your pharmacist or contact your local garbage/recycling department to learn about take-back programs in your community. See the FDA's Safe Disposal of Medicines website (http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p) for more information if you do not have access to a take-back program.
